Well, finally did it and went to a casting event at Dorchester. Opened my eyes up at the different rods, reels and casting styles but enjoyed it and will go again so now on the look out for a rod of around 14' for casting as opposed to my 16' Triplex.

So, how far did I manage I hear u ask: I was constantly at 160 metres with the best at 163m/178yds. I could probably do better with more compression, reel down the butt and a more refined casting style but it's a start and not too bad with ...

So with the cod season upon us I gues thoughts move to getting some distance. Well the cod aren't always at 200yds, but a smooth efficient casting style will certainly be a good start.

So Colin has generously offered his time to our members again. He will be in the cogden area for a week from the 10th to the 17 October. He has suggested a good date for a group session would be Friday 16th. I guess we will be looking at an early evening session. I personally can't make this date as its my ...

After years of self taught thumping a lead, I have been enlightened into the correct OTG technique and even started on a pendulum. The past year or so I have been blaming my multiplier for the birdies but after learning to cast correctly I've realised the majority of birdies were most probably caused by my casting tecnique!

I've seen a different side to my multiplier and I like ...

Colin has kindly offered to help any forum members who may wish to improve their casting, and lets face it thats all of us. I am willing to organise this so to get things started I need to know who would like to attend this session. The idea will be to choose a venue where we can all fish and then take it in turns joining colin for some tuition. I can guarantee that you will improve your technique, cast more consistently and find you put much less effort into your cast to get the same distance.

Colin has given the go ahead for the next casting session. Its going to be on Saturday 14 March at Cogden beach, but will be weather dependent. We can meet on the beach from midday onwards. We'll start with some casting tuition to iron out the bad habits and refine our techniques before the serious business of plaice fishing gets underway. Low tide is around 2pm and we can fish the tide up using our improved casting distances to search out the plaice.

I was curious about how far I was actually casting so I used the council GIS mapping service to measure point to point across Weymouth harbour..from the end of the pier to the end of the small groyne the other side is 135m-147 yards..and it's approximately the same from the steps at the base of the pier by the fence....as an example to those who don't know how far 174m-190 yards is if you stand against the railing at the end of the pier it's what you need to get to the end of the stone pier!!!! ...

I work in Plymouth and usually bring mine up on a Fri afternoon and am willing to take orders if there is any requirement. The Live bait is sold by money and not weight eg Ł5.00 of rag. and is good quality and is not the tiddlers you usually get. One lug could cost 46p. The peelers come in packs of four and costs 75p per peeler.

Just thought i would share an idea I had that worked a treat ...

I am no big caster and still use the basic of-the-ground casting style, laying the rig and line out in line with the rod, sort of stuck with this as it seems to work for me and my fixed spool rods reels etc.

Only problem I have found with this is when using impact shields/rig clips etc the hook nearly allways comes off the clip when you rest the rig on the shingle, so I came up with the idea of tying the bait and hook ...

I'm trying to get the OTG cast correct. I'm not sure what it's called but i lay the lead out on the deck at 270 degrees from it's supposed end direction then lower the tip of the rod to about 6 inches from the floor, then with straight(if i remember) arms i rotate at the waist and bring the rod butt around in an arc until my bottom hand is directly infront of my face and draw the bottom hand in while punching with the top hand.
