Synthetic Baits - Glup Alive - any good?
Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone has any experience or opinions on the Glub Alive range of synthetic baits.
The packet shouts about them being 400x more effectice etc but no-one ever seems to talk about them?
From my experience: I bought a packet of the lug worms when I first started fishing, I keep them in the bottom of my bag. The main reason I bought them was for convienience, they don't need special storage, they don't go off. So basically if I run out of bait on a session or decide to go last minute on a Sunday night when the tackle shop is closed then I always have a bait back-up. The other good thing is that they are very durable, Crabs can't pull them off the hook, they don't move about, they stay where you put them, don't fly off during the cast etc etc. Aslo you can cut to any size or shape you want. Durability wize you could easily use the same bait for a whole session (even if you had caught fish on it), alought the smelly stuff they are soaked in would wear off.
Cost: its about £4-5 for a packet and to be honest that doesn't seem much more expensive than buying fresh bait, especially when you consider that any you don't use doesn't go in the bin, it is still there for next time. Also I stick the stuff I have used back in the packet to recharge, so the original packet I bought has lasted 5-6 sessions so far.
So the Question: How do they perform, this is where I am really looking for your input. I don't fish enough and am not experienced enough to be able to say if they are any good or not. Yes I have caught on them, but I have no idea if I have caught more or less than I would have with fresh bait at those times.
The fish on Weymouth Pier go mad for them....but then they go mad for anything, I am pretty sure if you lowered down a lump of mud you would start getting tugs.
Off the beaches, I have had wrasse and pouting - but only small ones, but then I onl catch small ones anyway.
Any thoughts boys?

Interesting to read your experiences with them. I think the key thing for me is how many match anglers use the stuff. I doubt many do. DB'y would be the best person to comment on them I reckon. But then again, if they are the killer bait I doubt he would tell us
Also if it did work so well I think we would of heard more and the shops would be always running out of stock! As you said, weymouth pier is one of those spots where strips of bacon would probably do, so not a great tester. I suppose with any bait, they are going to work in some situations, but the best way to really see if they are effective is to use them alongside standard baits and compare the results.

I'd rather use gouged out strips of my own skin...

He got plenty to spare!!!!
But seriously ive tryed it and its rubbish never caught a fish on it. I used to use it alongside natural ( ie 1 of a 3 hook rig would be fake) or used for tipping worm but the worm without caught more so stopped. Best if you want to have bait for a spur of the moment sesh is to stock up the freezer,i always have some squid and sandeel in mine for just such an occation.

And don't forget to salt down your spare lugworm. Great tipping bait.
