Sutton Bingham 22/4/17
Had a couple of fly fishing sessions this year while it's been quite on Chesil. I am very much a newbie to this style of fishing. Only ever had 3 other sessions last year, when nothing much was being caught because of the hot water temperature in the reservoir. Well that was my excuse for catching nothing other than a tree and a few clumps of grass.
This year things are slowly starting to click. Casting is getting better. At least less frustrating. I can make 20yds now. May not sound a lot, but I'm happy with that and something to build on. Trying to concentrate on making it neat and tidy at the moment rather than stretch for every inch. Which seems to be when it all comes crashing down in a big heap.
I've started missing a few bites which I'm counting as a positive. I must be doing the first bit right. I find it hard to concentrate on the line cast after cast. Start looking around for jumping or cruising fish whilst retrieving. Felt the rod pull whilst doing this last week. Too late fish gone.
I switched to a zonker fly. For those that are not familiar with it, it's a strip of fur which you can make dart about like a small fish. This is something I can associate better with as it's getting closer to lure fishing. Low and behold this worked and I hooked into my first fish. 5 minutes of anxiously waiting for the fish to tire and several leaps later (from the fish, not me) it was safely netted by my ghillie, bass bob. Thank you Bob.
2lb 5oz
Not massive but still a nice fish to get the ball rolling.
I think I've found my Mar/Apr/May fishing fix. Luckily fly addiction is cheaper than lure addiction.

Time spent fishing is not subtracted from the days of a mans life, get it where you can.
I will be on the fly before the beach as l crushed and then had my right thumb amputated 8wks ago so the dinky fly rod is coming out before l go swinging the big gear.
They taste good too.
My mate has been fishing Chew and says black or orange buzzers are having em.
Distance comes with practise same as the beach but you will always get cruising trout close in and sometimes an accurate 10yd cast will net you a beast.

You fly cast better than me. I thrash at it like a public school teacher with a cane !

That sounds mighty painful Mark! Hope you're soon back in action.
I've got some shiny new buzzers in my fly box. I can't bring myself to tie them on. So small and very little on them. I know it mimics what they're eating, but it just seems wrong lol
Next time out I'll give them a go.
I didn't say I cast 20yds every time I have bouts of thrashing as well. Especially when a gust of wind gets up. I have to keep telling myself to slow down and get the timing right. The more time I spend on the water the better and more confident I'm getting.

Post bangers take no prisoners!should have known better been using one for 25yrs plus.
Not going for the matching pair.
Excellent videos on Youtube to get some theory in slow motion but it does come naturally once you find your pace and feel in the rod you are using.
l was born "Where the bright waters meet" but did not pick up a fly rod until my late teens when helping out on Estates that had the Test running through them.
Until then my trout came on worm baits ,waiting for the bourne to go down or from the fine gentle art of the tickler, thankyou father.
That was in the 70s and 80s and times wus ard in our household, but living off the land and garden taught me a lot of respect for what we ate.
Makes me cross when the 2stone of mackerel brigade turn up.
Buzzers match the hatch but l must admit l get great pleasure from fooling any fish on what everyone is not using,it always gets a scrabble in the fly/lure/bait box going.
Small slow pulls on the buzzers then let them hang😊
