Gurnard on Chesil Cove
Hi All,
Haven't been on the forum for a while, basically because I haven't had the rods out of the shed since December!
Anyway, had a quick session at Chesil cove and thought I would let those that were interested know that it seems to be crawling with Gurnard.
I had a chat with a diver and he told me he had seen a load of monk fish about 100yards out - seemed unlikely but I suspect he had actually seen the gurnard.
Anyway, had 5 within two hours today three little ones and two big enough for the pot (mine went back). All went to squid strips on small hooks. They are quite far out though - only my best casts caught.
Later on I even had tiny one of a Dexter Wedge that it was barely bigger than. Cast out looking for mackerel - line got tangled so the wedge sat on the bottom for a bit while I sorted it - when I finally wound it in there was a tiny gurnard on the end!
Not sure if that is of any interest to anyone but thought I would share
good luck.

Re: Gurnard on Chesil Cove
Wondered where you'd been for so long Alex. Good to hear you got out and had some success on your first trip in ages. Seems to be a lot of gurnard showing up all along chesil at the moment.

When we fished in south Wales we used to be able to catch gurnard cast after cast buy using a mackerel strip on a 2ft flowing trace with a watch lead and you just slowly pulled it in along the bottem. Much like twiching the bait for flatties

Re: Gurnard on Chesil Cove
Cheers guys,
With work, getting married and a load of other things fishig got pushed to the bottom of the list for a while but I'm back now and determined to make more time to get out on the beach.
I am going to try and concentrate on lure fishing this year - I've never had much success before but I really like the idea that I can keep a rod and some simple tackle in my boot and whip it out at short notice. Also trying to be a bit more active and I think the climbing and walking around while plugging and spinning must be good for me.
Hopefully I will have more to report soon!
