Great year for cod

Post by pbs22 on Fri Jul 16, 2010 10:05 am

Hi guys just been chatting to a friend doing his PHD at uni in Bristol he does marine biology. Told me some very interesting things, he said that this year is going to be one of the best for cod since the 1970s. Hes been working on a paper on fish migration paterens in the river severn and bassically this year is going to be good. I just hope that the same is true on chesil aswell!

great year for cod

Post by poutman on Tue Jul 27, 2010 4:54 pm

well heres hoping .... but here`s something to ponder about. as we know there were shed loads of small mini codlings last winter and this spring..
[now i`m talking about the bristol channel here]. now in a normal year they`ll be back to around 1 lb = 1 1/2 lb. great you say yep i`d agree. now here`s the bonus
we all know that in a bad winter with severe freezing weather the cod spawn is very good... remember the bad winter of 1996. the follwing year was very good on the south coast from dungeness past hayling island and down to chesil.. so this year is it fair to assume we could get TWO good spawning years back to back..... lets just hope the commercials and ILLEGAL BEER VOUCHER BRIGADE cant mop em all up..... [we all live in hope]

so we could get shed loads of fish from pound and half downwards.. with a sprinkling of better fish thrown in...... the only problem i can see is will there be ENOUGH LUG to satisfy everyone...

time to get the fork out and head for the black lug beds and freeze a few down !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MMMMM! the 70s, saturday night fever, spangly rock stars, bolan, bowie and COD. I dont think we will ever see the likes of the 70s again, for fishin anyway. Average bags of 30lb a time when you really could go and fish for your supper and not go hungry. I Remember a time when.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz snore. lol.

i only had one trip to chesil last winter when i didnt have a cod.
i had a couple of trips when i only had 1 and quite a few trips with 2 or 3.
best session was 4 cod and 2 18-20lb conger in 6 casts. good session that one.
deano had 2 doubles in one session and many more smaller ones over the season, and so did most of his fishing partners.
this year i feel there will be far fewer cod, b ut the ones that are there will be a good size and there should be quite a few doubles (hopefully)

Yes, it was a good season last year. I wasn't as prolific a catcher as the bigger casters, but still kept the freezer topped up regularly. Lets hope this season brings some bigger ones along.
