COD RIGS....

Post by ArronBarclay on Sat Dec 04, 2010 9:23 am

Just thought i'd ask what people find is the best cod rig for them, i feel most confident on long pully pennels with 0/4 bottom and 0/2 flying hook, but as for never having a coddy off the beach havent really got much to go on...

I'm not a fan of pulley rigs on chesil. When I started that was my main big fish rig, but generally only caught doggies. I changed to a pulley dropper and caught cod. This year I changed to an up and over running ledger type thingmy job, and have caught lots of cod! Having built up some experience at boat fishing the one thing you hear all the time is keep the bait hard on the bottom. I transferred this to shore fishing for cod. The bait has got to be on the sea bed and with a pulley rig in a strong current the bait could be swept a couple off feet of the bottom.

Well, thats my theory anyway Smile

They're dead easy to make Chris. Bit like an upside down pulley with ans up and over. I think there is a picture on Martyn website.

Yes, here you go Martyns rig

I dont use the swivel and imp, just a gemini clip and a splashdown lead, but everything else is the same.

Mine are similar to Richard's..........Caught first ever Cod on this type of rig this season. I also like the fact the rigs can provide a good long hook length when in the water, yet are nice and compact to cast with, which i find helps me to get more distance.

Been looking at the same rig for Chesil, thinking that casting otg may be a bit problematic with it though in keeping it clipped and thought that maybe if i made it longer and just clipped it up it would hold together better on the shingle.

Any sense in that or should i just clip and whack out the up and over?

I use the gemini splashdown weight Steve and have found it fine for otg, and i'm not an experienced otg caster. Worth trying it out and see what you think.

I think once you get the off the ground cast mastered you shouldn't have a problem. Its all about laying down the lead turning and casting in one smooth action. Its the laying down the lead, then getting your feet and arms in the right position that allows the line to go slack and baits unclip. Still, I haven't managed that so well myself, which is why I pendulum.
