Poor cod 11.5ozs...monster
Somewhat tongue in cheek but as it was so "big", all 11.5 oz of it , I thought id register this poor cod from abbotsbury on Wednesday last week ....
Re: Poor cod 11.5ozs...monster
It looks very much like a pout to me.
the pectoral fin has the distinctive black spot that the poor cod doesn't and the first anal fin looks to run under the first dorsal fin rather that stopping short of it.
i'm sure others will say their bit.

I'm not 100% sure myself Mike as the photo doesn't show all the features clearly. Was it shedding loads of scales in your hand?

I always used to go by the shedding of scales, but I had a fish about 1 1/2 lb shedding scales last week and it was defo a pout.

Re: Poor cod 11.5ozs...monster
Well to be honest i usually go by the scales and that they just look different (shape and skin) when they come out of the water which is why i was so sure and because of the size i did double take ..That said i didnt have a witness and the photo could do with being better to be absolutely sure. I take on board some of the comments made here about its ID which has now made me doubt myself so lets just say its a fine picture of my headlamp and fishing top and a small member of the cod family to boot.....

The logo is SHAG, or specimen hunters angling group. You would think such a legendary specimen hunter such as Mike would know the difference tween a pout and a poor cod, and a thornback and an undulate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
