OTG casting tip - Dogfish tip of the day
Just thought i would share an idea I had that worked a treat ...
I am no big caster and still use the basic of-the-ground casting style, laying the rig and line out in line with the rod, sort of stuck with this as it seems to work for me and my fixed spool rods reels etc.
Only problem I have found with this is when using impact shields/rig clips etc the hook nearly allways comes off the clip when you rest the rig on the shingle, so I came up with the idea of tying the bait and hook to the clip with PVA string, this disolves in water so still releases the bait specially when fishing the chesil tide flow, keeps the bait nice and stream line behind the lead ....
I nearly allways prepare my next rig ready and just before I reel tie it up ready for casting.
Hope this helps

Good tip there dogfish i've been having that problem too and couldn't think of anyway around it. I may have to invest in some of that string, i presume it's available in most tackle shops?
Thanks again
Thanks again

Guys
All good ideas however
A better way for OTG is to place the lead under the rod between the rod tip which is on the shingle and your feet, on a 4ft drop.
Then turn and hit it and you will gain yards. I often hear anglers moan about OTG and bait clips becoming un clipped but never happens with the above method.
If demand is there and Richard can get it together I am prepared to come to a meet and show you.

No Probs. We tried having a casting session with colin some time ago but that didn't come off in the end. I'll start a thread to sign up for a session.

Apologies for bumping up an old thread, but thanks to Colin for the above post. I've been seaching on here for an improved method to my casting, and the above looks like something that would suit me as a progression from just 'lobbing it out there', and ok to use with fixed spool reels.
Cheers Colin

Youtube the brighton cast Trev, a good simple progression from a basic chuck out and will get you out a fair distance, as for rigs staying clipped when on the deck i use breakaway imps now and find that they stay clipped really well when i'm laying out my otg cast.
When you feel comfy with the brighton get yourself up to a casting day at Dorch, that will put metres on your cast and an ideal place to start getting into an otg technique.

Agree with that. A very effective cast anywhere. A real advantage on cramped marks where other casts are out of the question. Safe as well if there are other people around you as the leads only heading in one direction and that's out to sea. The imps do seem to be the best clips i've found when casting off the ground.

Do an excellent job but won't hold a bigger hook for me than a sakuma 2/0 circle, alright for rays etc where i'll normally use a 1/0 but for big hooks/big fish pretty useless imo.
