Casting tuition Poole
Hi there, I've just purchased my first pair of Abu 6500 reels after years of only using fixed spools. Although I can cast quite far I think my technique is far from perfect and am interested in casting tuition. Does anyone know of anyone in the Poole/Wareham area. I can travel to Weymouth if need be, any info would be great

if your in portsmouth anytime feel free to ask, i am free most days. first thing, which will help you alot, take the brake block's out of the reel, which are located on the side of the spool... they are little white ones i assume put em in a bag and leave in box. this will add a fair few yards to any cast. leave the mag slidey fully on then gently ease it off when ur comfatable using a mutli...
as for technique - first thing i always say is look 300yards to the sky and not 300 yards out to sea.

Thanks for the advice, was going to buy an older 6500ct off eBay and remove the blocks and was gonna get one of them bare bones end plate mods with the mono mag brake on it. Just need to put aside a day to practise or have a lesson or 2 as whenever the weather is half decent I want to fish instead

????????? thats just asking for birdy city..... surely you better off learning to cast properly rather than just turning your reel in to a line mangle...???
Re: Casting tuition Poole
agree with arron. learn to cast then adjust reel setting.no good modifing the reel when you aint learnt to cast with it yet.pratice makes perfect,so the saying goes.

Met diamond geezer from here who had a new and I think first time for him a multipler and asked me to help set it up and use it.
We had a couple hours getting the basics of the reel and the cast right so much so we moved the reel down the butt first time he had tried that ( he humoured me!!! )and never had a birdie the whole time and I thi k he has been out since and still no problems and his distance is improving so the moral of this story is learn the basics first and then if you must tinker with the reel do so.
However a slow running reel in fishing mode is a better bet for fishing than having it running on the edge a 6500'green mag with all mags removed and one small block will put a good cod bait 125 yds with ease and control. Leave the mags on 3 and take the block out and it will do 100yds with bait. Why the difference that's another story!
Now the bit that will cause a discussion, only 125 or 100 yds with baits !!!! I would be surprised if 10 per cent of anglers can do that on a regular basis they might think they can but if the measured the cast on a field or on an empty beach at low tide with a rig they might be disappointed .

Agree with Colin on that one! Estimates of casting distance can be scary, I'm not a big caster but can reach 200m on grass (on a very good day downwind) add a grip lead, shingle, sensible reel, headwind and decent bait and thats down to 100m tops. Amazing how many guys on the beach reckon they cast 200 yds with bait!
