Bass Plugging

Post by Guest on Fri Sep 12, 2008 9:06 pm

Has anyone any experience of plugging for bass? I am a fly fisherman just starting to dip my toe in the sea and loving it. Any tips would be appreciated

Tried plugging with no luck yet. Had a few bass on spinners, but I was really after mackerel!! Problem with lures is getting them in front of a fish, so you need to find marks where bass are held for some time. On chesil the bass tend to patrol up and down the beach, which is why a ledgered bait is more successful. A few spots, like the rocky headland at the east end of Seatown, portland ledges and of course kimmeridge, can hold shoals of fish. As for plugs, I would get a small selection of lures that work at different depths and of different colours/patterns. Then its a matter of finding which one works on a particular day. Keep changing the plug and vary the retrieve until you find out what the fish are after.

Hope this helps, but as I said I have limited experience myself.

Thanks for the tips. I tried plugging for the first time today for about an hour and a half as it was all I could spare. Caught a fantastic garfish, which jumped right out as it took.
Also lost something big in the surf that was stripping line fast. The fisherman in me says it was a bass, but who knows. Very Happy Definately given me a taste though.
I'll keep you posted.

Great effort. Never had a garfish on a spinner, that takes some doing with their tiny mouths. Strange to have a fish take line then not be properly hooked, but sometimes a bass will bumb the lure before coming round to take a bite. Maybe it got foul hook and shook free?
