broke my wrist a while ago

Post by Guest on Sun Sep 23, 2012 6:37 pm

I broke my wrist in four places at the end of last year, right wrist and right handed.
Only managed to get to the beach once about a month ago and i had hell of a job casting...Broke off first four casts and birds nests galore. didn't think about it at the time, but looking back i had a problem thumbing the line and keeping pressure on the reel during my cast(only an up an over.)
Always used multipliers and though i've never been a fantastic caster i have always got on with them ok. Not got much money so buying new rods and reels is out of the question at the moment. Anyone know if there are any tricks i can try? I aint a snob but i am not keen on fixed spool reels, just dont like the feel of them and with my casting technique it certainly is nothing to do with distance.
be great full for any tips or advice. it may just be a matter of getting used to how my wrist works and how much it will do.
I WILL PERSEVERE!!!

mines held to gether with pins and plates and keeping enough pressure on the reel is hard at times especially when cold.... do you use a thumb stall????? if not then might be worth doing as it will add an amount of extra grip on the spool and help you out abit. or just try and smooth your cast out with regards to the casting action

try moving the reel down to the bottom of the butt.
you will be gripping the spool with the left thumb, which should be a lot easier.

Hi There

I presume you are a right handed caster that is to say your right hand controls the reel!

If you put the lead on the ground when you cast that should take the pressure of your right arm/hand and should make the cast easier and more relaxed.

Darreninti is right if you move the reel down the butt and control the reel with the left hand and use that to pull the rod through then the right hand is hardly needed, in fact a good pull with the left has more effect on distance than a lazy left hand and a strong punch with the right.

pmsl thanks Pete lol... unfortunately it was the same place.. and what i paid for them leads nearly worth taking up diving to retrieve them!
I can't move the real on my current rod it's a fixed position (i ain't no expert just love my time on the beach). where can i get a thumb stool or is it just something you make? i did try some thick plaster but that just wore away and i must admit i found i lost feeling on the spool if that makes any sense...
Colin i would love to get details on how to catch you for a lesson or two or three, bit concerned if you've not met a useless bar steward yet i'm your man.
Thanks everyone for all the tips, I LOVE THIS SITE!!!!

if you get a slither of inner tube about an inch wide and 4inches long and tape it just behind your reel seal. when you go to cast you pull the inner tube up over the reel and pinch it between your thumb and the spool, once you have cast the inner tube retracts out of the way leaving you to control the spool with your thumb...

the length of the tube can be cut to suit it wants to be long enough that it will stretch up and onto the spool enough but short enough that once it retracts it becomes clear of the spool

this will show arrons description

or depending on rod you could move the reel down on coasters to get yourself out of trouble while your hand heals ,leaving your reel seat up.
