a few from the lakes 2013
Well i said last year on here that there was a big head of large trout in the lake towards the back end of the season and that 2013 could be something special for trout anglers on chew and blagdon. here are a few fish that have come out so far...enjoy....
a nice brown
a few buzzers that the fish feed on
an 8lb rainbow from barrow tanks. (a huge fish for these lakes)
a pic to show the health of the ecosystem found on our lakes
a cracking 8lb+ overwintered rainbow from chew
a 9lb 2oz rainbow from chew
a 9lb 12oz rainbow from chew
one of the many visiting ospreys to the lakes
the biggest fly caught brown to ever come out of our waters...all 17lb of it!
o and finally the pike fishing hasent been too bad either....
a 39lb pike caught on the fly last week!!!

Re: a few from the lakes 2013
brad we had 9 on blagdon in one week this year. a record for us. there was a young male and older female bird who we hoped would breed on the lake but it wasnt to be. they hung around for a lot longer than usual due to the strong winds we had at the time. they were just passing through to move north. the female bird had bread in north wales the previous year so we were hoping she might try on our lakes but it wasnt to be unfortunately. im sure they will at some point.
and yes. i imagine it was quite a large fly. the bigger pike often take the larger flies. but occasionally you will get one on a fly as small as size 10! often get caught on small lures when people are trout fishing.

bertie you will struggle to catch a pike like that in dorset. there are some places where its possible but chew valley lake is an exceptional place for the pike fishing scene. undoubtably the best pike fishery in the uk if not europe. just have a gander on some of the pike fishing forums, chews name is laced in loads of reports

Re: a few from the lakes 2013
naughty bird, after the smaller easy to get stock fish.
those stock ponds must be such a tempting target.
good to see they were recovered and released.
if it was a grouse moor and a harrier it would never be seen again , unfortunately

Re: a few from the lakes 2013
Great pictures John, thats one mean looking bird! I must say i was lucky to witness one of these amazing birds on Blagdon earlier in the year and what a spectical it was to. I sampled the fishing on Blagdon on Wed and had a cracking day, i managed a limit bag of 8 fat rainbows between 2lb6oz and 3lb8oz and probably lost as many as i landed. I did hook 1 of around 5lb+ that emptied my fly line and 50 yards of backing in what seemed like seconds before smashing me up as it leaped about 4 foot in the air!!!! 10lb flouro went like cotton My favourite reservoir for surroundings and for the fishing, i mean, how many lakes can you fish on a bank covered in orchids with ospreys above?
