I think i might be hooked
Evening all, well after a text conversation with southside on Saturday morning the question was do we fish the solent for hounds or try our luck casting at Steyning the wind was the deciding factor so plans were made for a bash at tournament casting.
Sunday saw me a little apprehensively leaving Abingdon at 7.30am to meet at Stu's house loading my gear into his truck and then departing to Steyning. After a quick detour (Stu went the wrong way, professional lorry driver my arse) we eventually got there around 10.30, I was a little nervous to say the least well it didn't help with stu going 'that's Steve Lewis he's probably number 2 in the world, thats Mark Jakins he's in the England squad, thats Steve Brookman, thats Matt Russell he holds the record for the longest ever recorded cast over 291M thats Dennis Retter he's the England team manager and all the time I'm thinking holy crap what am I doing here!
Anyway a round had just finished so we paid our money, set up our gear, I decided to sit the first one out and watch to see how these things are organized, did i not mention the fact I've never done this before . so it all looks simple enough line up, have a lash, rest your rod over there, wait till everyones finished, walk down the field dodging the cow mines retrieve your lead walk back dodging the mines, put the kettle on wait for the big hitters to reach their leads pour the tea wait for the big hitters to walk back finish the now cool tea do it all over again, (I'm thinking I'm going to be drinking a lot of tea).
Oh god it's my turn why is no-one talking, why is everyone watching me, ok so it wasn't like that at all they just carried on doing what ever they were doing, so I swing, I cast, it goes, it doesn't crack off (I am available for lessons barkers) it lands in court 158M I've done it I'm a tournament caster. okay the big boys were almost twice that distance but hey ho a journey of a thousand miles starts with the first small step.
Next 178M then 189M then 197.59M Yes you heard me 197.59M on my first time casting, I loved it, I don't care that most people are longer than me I just want to try and beat what I've just cast, by now I'm almost running back to be ready for the next round well I would do but it's up hill into the wind dodging cow crap.
If I didn't live so far away I would be there every month, as far as I could tell there is no elitism, nobody cared if you couldn't cast as far as them it was just bloody good fun. So to all out there who have thought about it, get it done believe me you won't regret it! yes some of the guys there are man mountains, but Matt Russell the guy who has the longest recorded cast (done at Steyning on their 2 day event) is just an average build but as he said he has just tried to perfect his technique, yes we were on speaking terms even though I could tell he was worried by the fact that I was closing the gap between us!!!!
apologies to anyone whose name I've got wrong, mis-spelt or generally insulted it's not intentional.

Sounds like a great day out, might give it a go but I have a habit of turning into Norman Wisdom when the pressures on.
Great report though

Re: I think i might be hooked
i have to agree with you really.
he is a thoroughly nice person who is more than willing to go out of his way to offer help and advice to just about anyone.
it was Dennis who first taught me the casting basics on the field. In fact Dennis used to run mid week sessions to teach casting.
he is defo Mr casting and i dont think there is really another person in the casting world so well known and respected.

Well done Steve, you'll soon be casting over the top of all those close in fish
Re: I think i might be hooked

Yes along with a lot of others stu 'beat' me, but he didn't mention by how much or the fact that he had to pull a PB out of the bag to do it....
Thanks Dizz but no mate I don't want a tournament rod I went on Sunday with my normal fishing gear ( I had to change reels as I realised one was rather low, I had one more layer of line then I was on the spindle oops) I'll wait until my technique matches the gear I've already got before I spend £100's on a rod and reel I'd only ever use on the field.
And Pete the main reasons I want to improve my casting are so that I can reach the fish that are not close in and when they are close in I use very little effort to reach them hopefully making the cast smooth and slow therefore to improve bait presentation.
