Want to know how far??
I was curious about how far I was actually casting so I used the council GIS mapping service to measure point to point across Weymouth harbour..from the end of the pier to the end of the small groyne the other side is 135m-147 yards..and it's approximately the same from the steps at the base of the pier by the fence....as an example to those who don't know how far 174m-190 yards is if you stand against the railing at the end of the pier it's what you need to get to the end of the stone pier!!!! No way I'll ever get anywhere near to that one!!.. I've learnt that baited I'm lucky to get 100 with the wind in me favour!!.....How the hell you get the rest/best out of the equipment is beyond me!!...I salute all those who have mastered the art of distance casting...

Re: Want to know how far??
Hi Record Eater
Thats not a bad distance to start with however if you can make the casting fishing session in March(watch this space) you could improve your distance.
Bearing in mind that the "Average" angler struggles to put a bait 100yds and in most cases in about 80yds!!
If you can put a baited trace cast from a shingle bank with a FISHING cast in the region of 150yds then you are in the top 5% of fisherman/casters.
Although distance is not everything but helps when things get tough and the fish are a long way out, try and concentrate on @120/130yds with bait that will increase your catch rate

Know what you mean about shingle and bait Colin..put a head wind into that equation and a third comes off me distance easy!!!...it's a good job that when the fish are in off Chesil that they are 'In' !!

Maybe you need to get one of those mortar things that sends it 300 Yds... or even a kite!!!
Seriously though, Colin will help as he did me. See you in March.
